Frome Museum Made in Frome

Sculpture
Around the world are many examples of sculpture made in Frome by Singers Art Metal Works. Situated until 1999 in the centre of Frome, the Singers works have now moved to one of the industrial estates in the town, and make brass sprinkler heads. The Morris Singer Foundry at Basingstoke continues the Singer of Frome tradition of statue casting.

Famous statuary made in Frome include 'Justice' on The Old Bailey, 'Boadicea' on Victoria Embankment & Gordon of Khartoum (right). A list of all those known of can be found
here. More information on Singers can be found here.

The 'Singers Links' project
Artefacts from the town's industries have been embedded in glass blocks in a unique piece of public art completed in 2001. A new wall in Library Square holds these fragments of history, including items from Bussman Cooper (fuses), Singers (sprinklers) & Notts Industries (car parts), together with glass blocks created by young people in Frome. Assisted by Local Heritage Initiative & Mendip District Council funding. A new bronze casting of a camel by the Basingstoke foundry, is sited in the play area where the Camel Shed stood (right) and an old power hammer & crucibles & other equipment from the old works, salvaged from the demolition, have been re-sited in the housing estate.

The 'Made in Frome' group

A wealth of artistic talent exists to this day in Frome, making items of craft from artistic metalwork to puppetry. The Museum plan to enhance the links with modern crafts in their shop. The Made in Frome group enhance links with Frome's twin towns of Chateau Gontier and Murrhardt via reciprocal exhibitions, particularly during the Frome Festival.
