Frome Museum New Exhibiton: Maps and Plans of Frome to include 1886 Maps of Frome.

At a scale of 1 to 500
these maps show everything in  great detail, they are unique in that all new  buildings between 1886 & the Second World War have been annotated in red ink over the original map. Anything demolished or altered is still clearly shown.

Frome Museum, in the historic market town of Frome, Somerset, houses a fascinating collection of local artefacts and sources of information, ranging from the Horner family to glass negatives from Singers Art Metal works.

It has a library, a collection of historic maps, photographs, and a range of local information leaflets and books.

It has many artefacts on display, from the ancient quern to the Marston House Fire Engine, a great favourite with children. 

The Museum plans to enhance its permanent and temporary exhibitions and to increase the use of the building by local schools as well as the general public.

It will concentrate on improving the display of the collection of local crafts and industrial artefacts and the social history of Frome.

Recent acquisitions include; copies of tithe maps for most of the local area, pre-war scrap books kept by the Singer family, back numbers of Current Archaeology & research notesof the Knights Templar in Somerset.

September 6th to October 15th
1886 MAPS OF FROME

The exhibition will include recently conserved maps of Frome at a scale of 1 to 500.  They are so large they show gardens and even garden borders. Discover what used to be where your house is now and how Frome has expanded over the last 125 years.

October 18th to 26th November
PHOTO EXHIBITION

A study in black and white photos featuring the metal artwork of J.W. Singer and Sons Ltd.  A local factory with a worldwide reputation.

This exhibition displays the many different aspects of the metal artwork that was produced by the Singer factory in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
To include images of the statuary that can be found in many countries around the world.

The Museum is normally open from 10am to 2pm, Tuesday - Saturday. Free entry but donations are appreciated. It is a good idea to email/ring to advise of a search before visiting.


NB. The Museum is closed from the end of November, and re- opens Tuesday 13th March 2012

The Museum's aims are; To maintain, manage and enhance the museum's collection of artefacts and library resources in accordance with its collections management policy and to make these resources accessible to researchers and the general public. To provide a modern museum with an industrial focus.

There are many images and old documents in the Library section.
