The
Museum's exhibition space currently consists of two display rooms &
a Library, with displays of many local industrial artefacts, maps &
photos. The Library holds a wealth of documentation, photos & local
history information.
Archaeological and Historical Artefacts,
documents, photographs and printed material illustrating the historical
development of Frome and district. Many fine maps, property and family
information. Some of this information can be found on the 'Hundred of Frome' website. Industrial Artefacts,
documents, photographs and printed material illustrating the
development of local industries. Of special importance is a large
deposit of photographs and glass negatives from Messrs J.W.Singer & Sons Ltd. Art Metal Works showing the works in production and some of the fascinating statuary
sent around the world. With assistance from Local Heritage Initiative
funding many of these have been repaired & conserved and you will
find a selection of high quality prints on display. Other displays show
items from Bussman Cooper (later Beswicks), the Marston House Fire Engine, local
blacksmithying and a Chemist Shop from Bath Street (on right). Printing Printing
has been a major industry in the town for well over a century, and its
roots are traced back to the late 19th century. A section of the
display is devoted to Butler & Tanner, recently voted UK Printer of
the Year, including a marvellous old printing press. This firm is still
one of the largest employers in the town. Ironworks There is a permanent display of photographs, diagrams, plans & tools devoted to Fussell's Ironworks of Mells, who were significant edge-tool manufacturers in the 19th Century. Costume A
collection of Victorian and later costumes, the most important of which
came from the Horner family of Mells. Currently most of these are in
storage. Geology Rocks and fossils locally collected. Currently in storage but accessible by request. Fine Art A small collection of local material either of local people or views, or by local artists. Currently on display in Library. Town Model A large model showing the town centre as it was in 1985 (below).
